Baseline and Diagnostic Testing

The concussion baseline and diagnostic test is used by healthcare professionals to make safe return to play decisions. Return to play prior to readiness can be very dangerous for young athletes. The test assesses an athlete’s balance and brain function (including learning and memory skills, ability to pay attention or concentrate, and how quickly he or she thinks and solve problems), as well as for the presence of any concussion symptoms. We can perform the test anytime, but baseline testing generally takes place during the pre-season—ideally prior to the first practice.

Signs and Symptoms of Concussion

    • Physical signs- headache, loss of consciousness, amnesia, nausea, vomiting, balance problems, dizziness, visual problems, fatigue, sensitivity to light/noise, numbness/tingling
    • Cognitive impairment- slowed reaction times, difficulty concentrating or remembering, feeling slowed down, feeling mentally foggy
    • Emotional impairments: irritability, sadness, more emotional, nervousness, anxiety
    • Sleep disturbance- drowsiness, sleeping more/less, troubles falling asleep

If you suspect a concussion, schedule a test 24 hours following the head trauma.

Post Concussion Treatment

Treatment focuses on the deficits found in the diagnostic test. There is a 5 step protocol that we follow for safe return to sport.

Research is finding that there is increased risk for musculoskeletal injuries (ankle sprains, ACL tears, etc) following a concussion. Recovery of balance, coordination, and strength is important to minimize that risk.
